Fleurieu Peninsula beaches are home to Australia’s most threatened beach nesting birds, the Hooded Plover. These small birds are predominately found on ocean beaches, sand dunes and coastal inlets. They have a sandy plumage, black hood and neck collar, white nape, pink legs, black tipped red beak and red ring around their eyes. They feed on sand hoppers, insects and bivalves.
