On the Central Plateau of Tasmania in Arthurs Lake and Woods Lake, lives the threatened species of Arthurs Galaxias which is entemic to this area. It is a small freshwater fish, olive-green to golden in colour. The population in Woods Lake declined to the point of extinction. Translocations from Arthurs Lake may help re-establish that population. Predation from brown trout and other alien fish and a barrier between the two lakes are the primary ongoing threats to the Arthurs Galaxias.
